Kalahari Plains Camp: A Jewel of Botswana’s Central Kalahari
The Kalahari Plains Camp, perched on the edge of an expansive pan south-east of Deception Valley, offered a truly immersive safari experience in Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). Known for unparalleled summer game viewing, CKGR is a wildlife haven, especially from December to March. The camp was one of only two lodges operating in this immense reserve, which is approximately the size of Switzerland, providing visitors with sweeping views across the vast plains.
Located near the iconic Deception Valley, Kalahari Plains Camp moved from its original site in 2009 to a more secluded position, away from public access roads, to enhance guests’ wilderness experience. The tented chalets were designed with large gauze windows and rooftop decks, offering a close-to-nature feel, along with sleep-out options to enjoy Botswana’s starlit skies. During peak season, guests could enjoy sightings of rare species like the bat-eared fox as well as more common plains game like springbok and oryx, while black-backed jackals added to the diversity.
However, the camp’s seasonal appeal made it a top choice primarily during Botswana’s wet summer months, while the dry season (June to November) often meant fewer wildlife sightings. Those who visited during the rainy season left with remarkable wildlife encounters and memories of a pristine wilderness that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
